The Red Shoes is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. In the story, the anti-heroin Karen, spoiled and ungrateful, was cursed to dance forever in her red shoes until her death. She danced endlessly, and at the end of the story, she cut her feet off to escape from this curse. I translated this story into two projects.
I made this scene in Unity. It consists of an extremely large terrain with trees and a camera that moves and turns randomly, mimicking the part of the story where Karen is cursed to dance in the forest and never stops.
I wanted to make a typeface using the movements of dancing. To translate dance moves into 2D graphics, I attached LED lights on my friend and asked her to dance. With a slow shutter speed, I was able to capture the light trails that followed her movements. Then I picked out and cleaned up the shapes that resembled letterforms.
